The Mexican hammock: the origins of the hammock
Hammocks have a long history dating back around a thousand years, although they are not native to Mexico. They are thought to have reached the Yucatan Peninsula at least two centuries before the arrival of the Spanish, but the exact antiquity remains uncertain. The word "hammock" comes from the Taino and means "fishing net".
net hammock : A weave as old as time
The Queen Maya is distinguished by its excellent weaving technique, and is made in the Chiapas region of southern Mexico. This hammock perpetuates an ancestral tradition handed down from generation to generation by four families of craftsmen. In the past, hammocks were made from the bark of the Hamack tree, then the sisal plant was used for its soft, elastic fibers. Today, these hammocks are woven by hand with a wooden or bone frame and needle, a process that can take up to two weeks. Each design emerges during the artisanal process. How to install a Mexican hammock
Curvature is the key factor in the comfort of a Mexican hammock. It must be well balanced, neither too taut nor too hollow. Divide the length by 2 to obtain the height. If your hammock is 4m long, you can hang it 2m high. Ideally, hangers should be inclined at around 30° to the horizontal. This position offers the best comfort while minimizing tension on the ropes and bindings. By maintaining this curvature, you'll be able to enjoy your Mexican hammock in complete relaxation.
Nylon construction
A tough material used in fishing nets, the Queen Maya can be used outdoors, resisting extreme climates. However, we recommend storing it under cover after use to ensure its durability. Nylon offers superior durability to cotton, avoiding damage caused by prolonged exposure to sun and rain. Nylon hammocks are particularly popular in hot regions such as southern Mexico, where they are used daily as a bed replacement, offering a refreshing solution thanks to their optimal ventilation.
A symbol of union and family in Mexico's rural traditions
With regard to the hammock as a place for human reproduction, we'd simply like to point out that some families in rural areas have a particular tradition. Before marriage, it is customary for the bride-to-be to make a "big hammock", which she will share with her husband after the celebration of their union.
